Think Safety First.Killian Construction Company has a primary concern for the safety of its employees, with a goal of providing a risk free work environment. We at Killian Construction realize that construction work involves many types of physical hazards, but believe accidents and risks can be greatly reduced if everyone knows and follows safe practices.

The Killian Project Team takes an active role in managing the safety of the project. Planning is the most critical element in development of a safe and productive project. During preconstruction planning, special emphasis is given to high hazard phases of the project such as, but not limited to, excavation, fall protection, scaffolding and electrical hazards. The needs of our clients are also considered in order to minimize disruption to facility employees and operations.

Killian Construction is committed to the highest safety standards and will provide the mechanical and physical facilities required for personal safety and health. We pledge our safety and health program will include:

  • Providing leadership well informed about the safety and health programs.
  • Requiring employees to fully participate and encourage others likewise, in total compliance of the rules and regulations for safety while performing their duties.
  • Measures to eliminate personal injury and equipment and property damage.
  • Training and motivation relative to safe and healthful work practices ensuring safety in all operations.
  • Providing a safety and health program which ensures compliance with all applicable State, Federal, and owner requirements.

Our safety and health policies are derived from the best practices of similar organizations and in accordance with the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Our degree of success will be a direct result of our ability to educate all persons in accident and injury prevention and the implementation of such knowledge. To that extent, our safety training program is designed to create employee and subcontractor awareness in identification of potential hazards, along with typical controls and abatement methods. Initial safety orientation and training will cover, but is not limited to the following topics:

Accident Procedures & Investigation
Emergency Action Plan
Electrical Safety
Fire Protection / Prevention
Housekeeping
Disciplinary Policy
Hazard Communication
Fall Protection
Ladder & Stair Safety
Personal Protective Equipment

Killian Construction utilizes Weekly Toolbox Talks for promoting safety on-the-job to employees and subcontractor supervision. Toolbox Talks are used to communicate safety requirements and to discuss past safety practices and shortcomings, as well as plan upcoming safety activities.

Jobsite safety inspections are fundamental in the prevention of accidents and injuries. It is critical to the success of our safety program to identify and correct hazards and unsafe conditions before injuries or accidents can occur. Site safety inspections help determine whether the project is being operated in compliance with OSHA standards, insurance requirements and the company safety program. Safety inspections are conducted routinely by the superintendent, project manager and safety department and we request and encourage participation in project safety review by our insurance carries and various state consultation programs. At Killian Construction we believe the safety of our projects is a shared responsibility and must be imposed at all times.

Steve Ratliff, Director of Safety and Asset Integrity has been with Killian Construction for 25 years and has 20 plus years in construction and general industry safety. Steve takes great pride in our safety program, evidenced by an experience modification rate below the national average.

While productivity is our lifeline to success, prevention of occupational induced injury and illness is paramount and should be given the first consideration, always. Our success requires a “team effort…management, supervisors and employees”, with a single goal of safety and health for every individual.
